more than just a typical dietitian

I've walked the messy road to recovery and fully believe you can get there too.

An eating disorder dietitian who won't judge you for wanting to be healthy (I'm all about health myself!) and will support the real you (not your eating disorder) in pursuing a well-rounded approach to health.

nutrition expert. recovery GUIDE.
health enthusiast.

hey, I'm Libby Stenzel

For as long as I can remember, I've been passionate about nutrition, health, and fitness. As a Type A perfectionist, I'm the first to admit that trait comes with both its pros AND its cons. My *somewhat obsessive* temperament is part of what led me to once take an extreme approach to "health," ultimately developing anorexia nervosa back in high school.

Fortunately, I was able to use my driven nature to help myself make a full recovery, and I'm now living my life on my terms, not my eating disorder's. The transformation and healing I've experienced through my recovery inspired me to start my private practice, Libby Stenzel Nutrition, to support other women in their healing journeys. My blog, Everyday Chocolate, serves as a resource for all things recovery and an inspiration for living a truly healthy lifestyle.

Born and raised in Michigan, I completed my undergrad, master's degree, and dietetic internship at the University of Michigan. Prior to starting my master's, I worked for two years with Cru at the University of Michigan mentoring college women in their walks with Christ.

things you should know about me

I'm an introvert to the core. If I've got an open evening, you'll find me relaxing with a good book and, of course, some high-quality dark chocolate.

things you should know about me

I'm widely adventurous when it comes to the outdoors and love all things skiing, backpacking, running, and hiking.

things you should know about me

I went to my first Michigan Football game when I was 5 months old. Anytime we beat Ohio State, it's a highlight of my year! :)

Yoga is an integral part of my weekly routine. In the mornings, you can catch me working on my backbends and handstands!

In a (very) different life, I'd be interested in pursuing a career as a personal chef!

my food philosophy

  • A healthy relationship with food is the foundation for incorporating nutrition science in a truly healthy way.
  • Food is meant to be celebrated and enjoyed.
  • It's when we pursue satisfaction in our eating choices that we are most likely to feel calm and centered around food.
  • There's no such thing as a "perfect food choice." There are only trade-offs.
  • What we eat does impact our health. But, when we overly obsess and stress about this, we are likely doing more harm than good.

my approach to nutrition wasn't always this way...

Growing up, I had a carefree and enjoyable relationship with food. However, in high school, the pressure I felt to succeed in sports led me to develop anorexia nervosa as well as an exercise addiction. I became increasingly obsessed with training and along with that came increased fixation on what I was eating. (Read more about my story here!)

I remember when my parents made me go see a dietitian for the first time. I left her office sobbing, committed to NOT doing anything she recommended. I was convinced I didn't have a problem and that I didn't need any help.

By the grace of God, I finally realized I had a problem and wanted to get healthy and reclaim my life. I *mostly* restored my weight by the time I went off to college and had a much healthier relationship with food.

I still didn't have my period back, and after 6 years finally decided I needed to do whatever it would take to restore my cycle. Working with a dietitian I followed online, pausing my running obsession, healing my relationship with exercise, and getting my body back to its truly healthy weight allowed me to get my period back and experience deeper healing physically and emotionally.

The freedom I've experienced led me to want to pursue a career as a dietitian helping other women in their own relationship with food journeys. I even switched gears post-college, dropping out of med school to pursue my dream to be a private practice dietitian.

I get how terrifying it can be to start to heal your relationship with food and exercise. At the same time, becoming truly healthy is so worth it!
